What Is Eczema?

Eczema is a term that doctors use to refer to the many different types of skin irritations. Because of this there are literally dozens of types of eczema that can affect people in different ways.

Research shows that in half of the infants that suffer from eczema the condition will be resolved by the time that they turn 3. The condition can recur throughout their life. Usually people who are affected by eczema will have a family history of the condition or of other allergic conditions.

So what causes eczema? Doctors have not been able to pinpoint exactly what can cause eczema. However, they have discovered that an abnormal function of the immune system plays a large role in it.

There are some forms of eczema that can be triggered by a specific substance when it comes into contact with the skin. These substances can be soaps, jewelry, cosmetics, detergents, clothing, or even when someone sweats. There are certain environmental allergens that can cause an outbreak. Psychological stress, humidity, or changes in the temperature can be factors.
